Fantasy Kicker Rankings Week 1: Who to start, sit kicker in fantasy football

The kicker position, a dying breed in fantasy football, still plays a role in leagues that recognize its existence. Depending on the scoring parameters, a good or bad kicker can have a huge impact on a team’s match. That’s why it’s important to look at all factors when evaluating the top kickers each week, and our Week 1 fantasy kicker rankings take all of those variables into account.

As kickers go, the only perennial sure at this point is the Ravens’ Justin Tucker (aka Bad MotherTucker, Optimus Nine, or the GOAT leg). While the Baltimore baddie has never finished an NFL season with the scoring crown, he has never recorded fewer than 128 points in his 10-year career and has averaged 138.5 points over the last six seasons. The field-goal percentage he made? The percentage is 91.1 percent. Under 50 yards, he’s 95.2 percent. He missed just three of 97 attempts between 30-39 yards and zero from 30 yards. And, yes, he never missed a game.

DOMINATE THE DRAFT: Ultimate 2022 fantasy cheat sheet

If you weren’t lucky enough to have Tucker (@ Jets ) on your team for Week 1, don’t worry. There is always a new crop of elite plaquetteers emerging. Last season, Daniel Carlson of the Raiders (@ Chargers ) and Nick Faulk of the Patriots (@ Dolphins ) led the NFL with 150 points. Matt Gay of the Super Bowl champion Rams (vs. Bills) ranked just below them, with Matt Prater of the Cardinals (vs. Chiefs) tied for fourth with Tucker. All are great bets this week, and it’s especially nice to see Carlson, Gay and Prater batting in stadiums with roofs. The same goes for Evan McPherson (on the Rams), who made 12 field goals of 50-plus yards to lead the league last year. Long range shots are always a plus.

Sometimes, just hitting a strong offense becomes a success. That’s typically the case for quarterback Harrison Butker (@ Cardinals ), Packers’ Mason Crosby (@ Vikings ) and Buccaneers’ Ryan Succop (@ Cowboys ) — also all playing indoors, though Crosby (knee) is knocked up — stepped up, to that’s why he’s ranked low this week. They will have many scoring chances again. A few PATs, or even just a few FG attempts, can make for a safe, high floor, so our rankings are more conservative and lean toward more “set up” kicks this week.

STANDARD FANTASY COUNTERS FOR WEEK 1:

Regardless of your strategy with kickers, it’s a good idea to have a game plan. This may seem trivial, but specific adaptations can be significant. New Orleans and Denver allowed the lowest percentage of red-zone TDs last season, so the Falcons’ Younghoe Koo (vs. Saints) — hey, indoors! — should be a good Week 1 bet, though we won’t feel good about Seattle’s Jason Myers (vs. Broncos) offensively. As we get more stats after the season is over, we’ll have more to base our rankings on.

Good luck, have fun and check out the weather forecast! The laces are out!

We’ll be updating our kicker rankings as needed throughout the week, so check back for the latest changes.
