No. 7 Angelo State upsets No. 9 Colorado School of Mines in a multi-task thriller

Asa Fuller hit a 36-yard field goal in overtime to lift No. 7 Angelo State University to a 30-27 victory over No. 9 Colorado School of Mines in a nonconference football game Saturday afternoon in Golden, Colorado.

ASU (2-0) avenged last year’s NCAA Division II quarterfinal loss to CSM (0-2) in Colorado.

The Rams won an OT coin and they decided to go defense first.

After keeping CSM from putting any more points on the scoreboard, the Rams took over and Fuller came through in the clutch with the game-winning shot.

The Orediggers were 8-0 at home in 2021.

“It was a good game,” ASU head coach Jeff Girsch said. “This is a really good football team that we’re playing. Something tells me that as long as we do our job, we’re going to play them again sometime in the playoffs. I’m proud of our guys.

Angelo State University running back Nate Omayebu scores a touchdown against Chadron State during the college football season opener for both teams Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022, at Community Credit Union Field 1 at LeGrand Stadium.

“We knew we were a good football team coming into the game. The guys believed when we got down. We took over in the third quarter. We drove down the field and scored and we got it back and got a result. Pick 6. We just didn’t do some things like we did. we did and our boys didn’t hesitate.”
