Peanut Butter, Poinsettias and Trees: UF/IFAS Announces October Class Schedule for Apopka and Orange County

UF/IFAS Extension continues its classes and programs for Apopka and Orange County residents in October

Peanut Butter Challenge (Food Drive)

This is UF/IFAS Extension’s annual jar collection to feed families in need at local food pantries. Donations of unopened containers of peanut butter are accepted Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., through October 31.c 6021 S. Conway Rd.

4-H Poinsettia Sale (Fundraising)

The Orange County 4-H Program is pre-selling red, white and pink poinsettias in various sizes, as well as a beautiful poinsettia/mother bowl ready for the first week of December. Each plant sold generates funds for the Orange County 4-H Program to provide scholarships to participate in youth camps, leadership events and competitions that support positive youth development.

Pre-sale from October 1 to November 7, 2022. Suggested donations range from $8-$15.

Accept the Tree (Personally)

Dr. Join our UF/IFAS Extension Master Gardener Volunteers at Phillips Community Park for our Adopt-A-Tree event! Open to all Orange County residents who show proof of residency such as a driver’s license, utility bill or ID. Each home is entitled to two trees, and trees may only be planted on the resident’s private property. Trees are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis and varieties will vary based on availability, but all will be suitable for flowering in Zone 9B.

Saturday, October 1, 2022, 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., or until the trees are gone, whichever comes first. No pre-registration or payment is required to participate. 407-254-9200

Come for a guided tour of our Exploration Gardens at the Orange County Extension Center hosted by Orange County Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Agent Tia Silvasy. See unique plants and get ideas for your landscape in our 12 themed gardens. You’ll learn Florida-Friendly Landscaping principles, smart watering, vegetable gardening and flower varieties to attract bees, butterflies and beneficial insects.

Orange County Extension Agent JK Yarborough presents a hands-on follow-up to Beekeeping 201* at UF/IFAS Extension Seminole County in Sanford. You’ll learn how to light a smoker, choose the right PPE for you, do a routine hive inspection, varroa shake and more! *Completion of Beekeeping 201 is required before taking this class.
