Above Apple and Samsung, what do we have in the smartphone market?
Apple has been at the center of the smartphone industry for years. The iPhone’s sleek, stunning design, ever-improving chip and robust camera system have made it one of the most sought-after smartphones in the world. This month, Apple consolidated and expanded its leadership in the industry by introducing the next generation of iPhones.
While there has been lively discussion about the “Dynamic Island” (an industry-first feature introduced to the iPhone 14 Pro models), some are concerned about the phone’s high price. Hence, more and more people are opting for less popular and cheaper but equally powerful alternative smartphones.
If you’re ditching your old phones for something different, but don’t know what’s available on the smartphone market right now, we’ve got you covered! We’ve rounded up some commonly unheard of alternative smartphones worth checking out. Read this article and save it for later reference if needed!
No phone (1)
If you’ve ever wanted a futuristic phone that made you stand out from the crowd, the Nothing Phone might just be what you need. London-based technology company Nothing launched the Phone (1) as its first phone in July this year. Like many other smartphones, the Phone (1) is equipped with an OLED display with a high refresh rate (up to 120Hz) and a dual camera system, among other professional features. What sets the phone apart from others in the industry is its futuristic design on the back.
The Glyph interface, as it says nothing, consists of five LED lighting strips that light up when receiving incoming phone calls and app notifications. Users can customize lighting patterns and brightness for different contacts.
While the Glyph Interface looks like one of the most basic features we’ve seen on a smartphone, critics point out that it comes with drawbacks such as reduced battery life and unnecessary distractions. That said, if these drawbacks don’t concern you, the Nothing Phone (1) is really worth checking out.

Lightweight Phone II
As smartphone companies continue to pack their phones with more advanced features, we don’t realize how much we are absorbed in our screens. If that describes you, you’re sure to be impressed with what the Light Phone II has to offer.
The Light Phone II is the latest model released by New York-based mobile phone startup Light. Compared to the Nothing Phone (1), the Light Phone II adopts a more minimalist design in both the exterior and interior. When you pick up the phone, you should first notice that it doesn’t have a camera. It also comes with an E ink display rather than OLED (similar to the Kindle).
Under the hood, the Light Phone II is also built without most of the features we usually see in a smartphone – mailbox, web browser and social media. That is, the phone is not designed to prevent users from communicating with others. It still allows users to at least text and call family and friends.
For people accustomed to the capabilities offered by most smartphones, the Light Phone II is certainly an underpowered model. Meanwhile, Light’s goal is to create a minimalist phone that people will use as little as possible to save us from smartphone fatigue in the long run.
