If you want to use your driver’s license as ID to take a commercial flight in New Jersey or anywhere in the US, time is running out to get a REAL ID.
Updated Department of Homeland Security May 3, 2023 to get a federally approved driver’s license, which has stricter requirements than a standard license.
According to New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission spokesman William Connolly, if you want to get a REAL ID, you must make an appointment online at realid.nj.gov in one of two ways.
He said that if you need to renew your current driver’s license within the next 3 months, or if your license does not expire within 3 months, you can make an appointment to get a REAL ID. from 24 MVC Licensing Centers across the state.
An online check of appointment availability on Tuesday found limited options for Jersey residents.
Only 6 of the 24 Licensing Centers had any meetings at all. The Cape May and Salem centers had meetings this month, the other since late November, and the other 3 centers had no meetings until early December.
Availability is sometimes limited, Connolly confirmed, but said, “we’re adding more appointments every day at 7 a.m. for each upcoming business day, so our advice is that if you want REAL ID or are interested in REAL ID , visit our dedicated website.”
He said that even though the REAL ID deadline is less than 7 months away, the MVC is not expecting a frenzy of people wanting to get one.
Do you really want one?
“It’s really impossible to say how many people in New Jersey will need or want to get a REAL ID, there’s a lot of people in New Jersey who don’t qualify, these are federal requirements, there’s a lot of people in New Jersey who don’t fly.”
He noted that “for many people, you don’t need a REAL ID if you have a passport, military ID, or other form of identification that TSA will accept.”
You can check tsa.gov to find out what forms of identification other than passports and military IDs are acceptable for boarding a commercial flight.
We don’t want to be in a mad rush
Connolly stressed: “We don’t want a mad rush, we want people, if you’re interested in REAL ID or hear about it, go to our website, see if you need it and try to make these appointments.”
“We also issue Real ID with our mobile units, and we expanded that program last year and plan to expand that program throughout the fall and winter.”
Information about mobile devices is available on the MVC website.
Connolly said that about 375,000 REAL ID licenses with the star in the upper right corner have been issued so far in New Jersey, and that “we have a lot of people who could have gotten a REAL ID that chose not to. , so it’s not entirely clear how many people will need or want a REAL ID.”
